Kevin Greeley

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Greeley the morning of November 24.

Kevin was a member of Arlington’s Select Board since 1989 and a champion of sustainable transit and many other causes.

He was an early booster of the plan to rebuild Mass. Ave. in East Arlington. He turned his 2013 reelection campaign into a referendum on the idea, and won handily.

Kevin was attacked, sometimes viciously, by Mass. Ave. opponents, but at the ribbon cutting that marked the conclusion of the project he only spoke of these critics with praise, thanking them “for making us think” and making the project “even better.”

I knew him as a caring man who loved Arlington and took pleasure and pride in making it better.

In a time of profound change that sometimes threatened to pit the Townies against the newcomer “progressives,” Kevin was both.

There are obituaries from the Town, from the Arlington Advocate, and from YourArlington.com.

The November 26 meeting of the Select board has been cancelled.

There will be a viewing at Town Hall from 2 – 7 PM on Tuesday, November 27, and a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church on Wednesday, November 28, at 10 AM.

Donations in memorium may be made to the Arlington Boys & Girls Club in lieu of flowers.
