A blog about Mass. Ave.

Excavating by Lake St. in sun and shade, April 28, 2015.

This blog is a direct consequence of the Mass. Ave. Project in East Arlington (2008 – 2016) and its many odd characters and controversies.

What was once reported as news on this blog is, today, a chapter of recent history:

Today I write less often, and about other things.

Controversy and Construction

It may be hard to believe today, but in 2009 this road project was controversial. It met with skepticism and opposition as planning advanced.

Some predicted that the plan would shutter every business on Mass. Ave.

In response, the Town made design changes and held many public meetings.

The road finally got rebuilt and the businesses are still in business.

I started this blog in 2009, with the tagline “Redesigning Mass Ave. in East Arlington.” My columns here document the controversy and tell the story of the construction itself.

The Word on the Street today

Today I continue to write, though less regularly, about transportation issues in town. Many of them involve Mass. Ave.

I’ve rechristened the tagline and (finally) edited my About page to reflect the blog today.

All the Mass. Ave. Project stuff is still here (and I consider it some of my best work). Nonetheless, these changes put it squarely in the rear-view mirror.

I have also added pages under About that summarize the history of the Mass. Ave. project. There is a pictorial overview of the Alewife Greenway construction as well.

Below, the text of the old “About” page that the revision replaced.

The Word on the Street is an unofficial source of news about the redesign of Mass. Ave. in East Arlington.

I started this blog in June 2009 when I became one of ten new members of Arlington’s Mass. Ave. Review Committee. I’ll do my best to report what is going on here at this blog. Since I’ll also have my own opinions I will share those too. Your comments are welcome.

Note: If you are looking to get up to speed about the project and what is going on, start here. A very basic summary of the redesign is here. There’s a bit more detailed information in this post and then this one.

This blog is of course entirely unofficial and does not speak for the committee or the town.
