Town Meeting votes for art on Mass. Ave.

Moments ago, Town Meeting appropriated $12,000 to fund a public design process for art on Mass. Ave. in East Arlington.

Funds for the art itself will be raised privately and from grants.

The vote under Article 32 of the warrant was 130-62 with 3 abstentions.

Art can fit anywhere, but there are two locations on Mass. Ave that design consultants for the Town identified as possible sites for public art or other public amenities.

Sidewalk reconfiguration currently under way in East Arlington will create new space at the base of Grafton Street and across from Lake St. that could accommodate benches, a fountain, a permanent art installation, or other features.

Because this is public space a public design process is appropriate, and will build confidence and support for fund-raising.

Update: The Town has posted a roll-call tally of the vote on Article 32.

The work shown is Rodin’s Torso of the Falling Man.

I think this sounds like $12,000 going into the pockets of consultants instead of artists.

Yes, we voted to buy a design process, not a work of art.

What do you think?
