The writing on the walk

Stumbled across this today:

On the sidewalk across from Thorndike St.

On the sidewalk across Mass. Ave. from Thorndike St.

arrow

Bottom to top: Arrow, mark, and existing signal mast (upper left).

And no, it does not say “Five feet to MA St. arm,” though Mass. Ave. is about 5 feet away.

Follow the arrow for five feet and X marks the spot for the new traffic-signal mast at Mass. Ave., Thorndike, and Teel.

X marks the spot between sidewalk and Mass. Ave.

Here’s the same idea in the official bid specs for Mass. Ave.:

The mast arm will extend 3o feet to the middle of the street.

The intersection is being reconfigured, with the pedestrian crossing slightly west of its current position.

Before our eyes, the markings on paper become the markings on the ground on the way to reality.

Question: Since paint on grass does not last very long, does this mean Teel St. and the eastern end of the project will go first?

In other news: In response to Karin Turer’s suggestion on this blog, this year’s Feast of the East will include an unnamed “construction vehicle” for kids of all ages to ogle.

(Feast of the East will be on Saturday, June 14, from 11 am–3 pm this year.)
